ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Notre Dame limped to the finish line on Saturday, with all five players carding higher scores than they had in their Friday round at the 36-hole Malone University Spring Invitational. (

The Falcons placed eighth and last in the tournament, which was won by host Malone (297-304--601).
Brooks Steputis was NDC’s only player to break 80 over the two rounds at Tannenhauf GC. Steputis carded dual 79’s en route to posting a 26th-place finish with a final score of 158. No other Falcon placed in the Top-30 in the 54-man field.
The host Pioneers had three players earn Top-10 finishes in posting their team score of 601. That score was enough to nip Davenport (Mich.), led by one stroke heading into day two. Davenport shot a 296-312--608; DU’s Kale Waaso earned medalist honors in the tournament, with a playoff birdie to beat Justin Lower of Malone. Waaso shot 75-72--147 over the two days at the 6,694-yard, par-72 Tannenhauf layout.
Tony Pinzone (80-82--162) and
John Angelo (81-82--163) were Notre Dame’s third and fourth men in Alliance. They finished T-37th and T40th, respectively.
With the eighth-place finish, NDC sees its 2009-10 record fall under .500. The Falcons are now 19-24 on the season and 2-14 in two spring tournaments.
In their next scheduled event, the Falcons are slated to play in the Nye Intercollegiate tournament in Wooster, Ohio, April 23-24. The College of Wooster-hosted event will be held at Wooster CC.
NOTES FROM THE NEST …
FAMILIAR SITE: The NDC men’s golf squad has competed numerous times at Tannenhauf over recent years. Tannenhauf Golf Club is a family owned golf course built in 1959 by James G. Harrison and Fred Garbin. The course has played host to two Ohio Public Links Championships. The course is home to two frequent NDC foes, Malone and Mount Union. … NDC placed fourth (of nine) at last year’s Malone Spring Invitational at Tannanhauf.
BACK TO THE 70’s: With his pair of 79’s at the tournament, Brooks Steputis has now carded sub-80 rounds seven times this season; that’s a team-high. Steputis’ 2009-10 stroke average is 77.5. The Tustin, Calif., native led NDC in 2008-09 with a nearly identical average (77.6). … Notre Dame’s current team average stands at 80.1.
