Falcons compete at Jesse Owens Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Track & Field team performed against some of the best NCAA Division-I schools in the country over the weekend, as they competed at the 25th annual Jesse Owens Classic. (Results)

There were several schools in attendance at the non scored event, including several high profile Big Ten programs such as Ohio State, Michigan State and Penn State. There were several high profile Mid American Conference teams in attendance as well.

On the men's side, the Falcons held their own and placed well in their individual heats. The highlight of the weekend occurred in the 4x100-Meter relay, as the team of #Tom McKrill#, #Demar Sheffey#, #Joseph Leyland# and #Brandon Tolliver# placed first in their heat, finishing the event in 42.50 seconds. Tolliver also took third place in his heat in the 100-Meter Dash. #Adam Saintz# also turned in a third place finish in his heat, in the 110-Meter High Hurdles. Sheffey finished the 200-Meter Dash in 22.39 seconds, finishing fourth in his heat, and #Tom Gay# took a fourth place finish in the 400-Meter Hurdles, with a time of 56.16 seconds.

The Falcon women also performed well, totaling five top-10 finishes in their respective heats. #Jessica Thomas# and #Tiffany Tucker# finished third and fourth respectively in their heats in the 100-Meter High Hurdles. Thomas finished in 14.84 seconds while Tucker was right behind her at 15.11 seconds. #Shawnta Davis# placed third in her heat, as she ran the 400-Meter Dash in 26.13 seconds, and #Noelle Johnson# took a sixth place finish in the Long Jump, with a 17-foot-3-inch leap.

“We turned in a solid performance this weekend,” said Head Coach #Rico Franklin#. “Our athletes took advantage of this opportunity to showcase their talent against some of the best D-I talent in the country.”

The Falcons are back in action next Friday, May 7, when they head to Akron, Ohio, to compete in the Campbell/Wright Invitational.
