SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- At the conclusion of the spring sports season, the NAIA announced their Scholar-Athlete Awards for eight sports, and six student-athletes from Notre Dame were recognized on the list.
The six Falcons named scholar athletes by the NAIA were seniors #Eric Johnson# (Baseball), and #Tony Pinzone# (Men's Golf), juniors #Jimmy Goodwin# (Men's Tennis), #Fran Melzer# (Women's Track & Field), #Greg Koenig# (Men's Track & Field) and #Kevin McGarry# (Men's Golf).
Johnson, a native of Frankenmuth, Mich., played in 36 games, and started 32 for Head Coach #Nick Weisheipl# this season. Johnson hit .295, with five doubles, a homerun, six stolen bases and 14 runs batted in.
Goodwin helped the Falcons achieve one of their finest seasons in program history as they finished with eight victories. The Willoughby, Ohio, native went 9-8 in singles competition this season, finishing second on the team in victories.
Pinzone closed out his career with the Falcons by delivering a Top-10 finish at the American Mideast Conference Championship, earning him All AMC honors. McGarry, a product of Euclid, Ohio, was one of Head Coach #Nick Formica#'s top reserves.
Melzer, a Maple Heights, Ohio, native, was a distance runner for Head Coach #Rico Franklin#, and is also a member of Notre Dame's Cross Country team. Koenig participated in both sprints and field events this season, including the 400-Meter Dash, 400-Meter Individual Medley, and the Pole Vault.
Nominated by each institution's head coach, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, have achieved junior academic status to qualify and Nominee has been in attendance at the nominating institution two full academic years as a non-transfer student or a minimum of one full academic year as a transfer student. The NAIA recognized 548 scholar athletes in Men's and Women's Track & FIeld, 80 in men's tennis, 91 in men's golf, and 196 in baseball.
