Postgame Notes: NDC vs. Walsh

Quarterbacks turn it on at Fawcett

Game notes …

* Saturday's victory marked the program's first when trailing heading into the fourth quarter.

* NDC's game captains were quarterback Dak Britt, defensive lineman Bob Hansen, corner back Spencer Krebs, special-teams player Brandon Hummer and running back Pedro Powell.

* Notre Dame outgained Walsh in first downs (16 to 15), yards (350 to 288) and time of possession (31:09 to 28:51). That performance marks just the second time NDC has topped a team in those three categories (Oct. 2, 2010, vs. Central State)


Offense notes …

* Notre Dame set a new single-game record for total offense, with 350 yards (153 rushing, 197 passing).

* The Falcons hit several single-game records in the passing game, including most completions (22) and highest completion percentage (64.7).

* H-back Jack Foy set a new team mark for receptions in a game, with nine.

* Quarterbacks Dak Britt ad Rob Partridge combined for 323 total yards (125 rushing, 197 passing) -- 92 percent of Notre Dame's offense on the afternoon.

* The Falcons converted 50.0 percent (11-of-22) of its third- and fourth-down opportunities. The offense was 9-of-20 on third down and 2-of-2 on fourth.

* Running back Pedro Powell was held to 29 yards on 14 carries. That marks his lowest yardage total since Sept. 4, 2010 -- a stretch of 11 games.


Defense notes …

* The Falcons forced three turnovers (one fumble, two interceptions), which led to NDC being a plus-one in turnover margin for the game. Dating back to the 2010 season, Notre Dame is now a plus-nine over its last four games.

* Strong safety Bo Grunder led NDC in tackles, with nine. He now has 19 stops on the season and has led NDC in tackles for a game seven times over the last two years (2010-11).

* Sylvester Flowers and Derrick Smith had NDC's interceptions. The pair of picks marked NDC's first multi-interception game since Oct. 23, 2010. For Flowers, his interception marked No. 5 of his career, the most in program history.

* Bob Hansen had six tackles, two of which were for losses. The junior defensive end now has 17-1/2 such tackles in his career, an NDC high.

* Walsh running back Toba Olarewaju's 202 set a new single-game mark for the best rushing performance against Notre Dame. The junior workhorse tallied his 202 yards on 37 carries, and he scored both of Walsh's TDs in the game.

* NDC has allowed just 10 points over the second halves of its two games this season.

* The Falcons allowed just 15 first downs, the fewesy they have yielded in a game since holding Central State to 11 first downs on Oct. 2, 2010.


Special-teams notes …

* Michael Fields averaged 12.5 yards per return on two punt returns. He also made five catches in getting his first NDC start at wide receiver.

* Freshman placekicker Chris McClearn tied his season-long with his 37-yard field goal in overtime. The Warren, Ohio, native is 3-of-5 on field goal attempts this season. His two misses came in Saturday's game -- both were from 35 yards.


With its 20-17 overtime victory over Walsh on Saturday, Notre Dame is now:

* 1-1 in its series with Walsh

* 1-1 in overtime games

* 3-10 all-time

* 3-5 all-time in road games

* 3-3 all-time after a loss

* 2-4 in the month of September

* 2-2 all-time against Ohio foes

* 2-8 all-time on artificial turf

* 3-0 all-time when holding opponent under 20 points

* 3-2 all-time in games decided by eight points or less

* 2-2 all-time when scoring first

* 2-0 all-time when gaining more yards than opponent
