NDC Athletics - NCAA Division II 2013 Award of Excellence Second Place Winner

SAN DIEGO, Cal. --  Notre Dame College was announced as the Second Place Winner for the First Annual NCAA Division II Award of Excellence for their service project "40 Days of Lent, 40 Days of Service."

Notre Dame College was recognized by NCAA Division II as a recipient of Division II 2013 Award of Excellence Conference Winner for the Mountain East Conference in December, which placed them as a finalist for the national award.

The award is presented for an activity or event that exemplifies excellence in any of the areas covered by the six attributes of Division II—learning, service, balance, passion, sportsmanship, and resourcefulness.

During the Lenten period of 2013 Notre Dame College Student-Athletes completed 40 acts of service in line with the 40 days of Lent. The Falcons completed 41 acts of service and raised over $1,700 for Make-A-Wish. The project was conceived by SAAC to challenge Student-Athletes to engage with the campus and wider community through service activities.

"We are very proud to be recognized at the national level for the efforts of our Student-Athletes and campus as a whole," said Athletic Director Scott Swain. "At Notre Dame College we do not only compete for National Championships on the field but we want to be the best in terms of community service, we look forward to them repeating this project this year."

All 24 of the Falcon athletic teams completed a service activity, amassing a total of 350+ community service hours. The events included campus and community advocacy events and activities that raised awareness and money for charitable causes. In addition to raising money for Make-A-Wish the Falcons have also raised money for Breast Cancer Awareness and the United Way.

A record number of Division II schools were competing for the award, which was presented to Lindenwood University January 18 at the NCAA Convention in San Diego, Calif.

Notre Dame College Athletics, led by SAAC, will begin this year's 40 Days of Lent 40 Days of Service on Wed. March 5 and the project will last until Thur. April 17.
