Box Score SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- In a rematch of the 2013 Mountain East Conference Championship, the top-seeded Notre Dame Falcons played host to the visiting and second-seeded West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats on Sunday afternoon at Mueller Field. While the Bobcats came away with a 1-0 win over NDC in last season's championship game, the Falcons flipped the script this time around, using an 89th-minute goal from junior Alex DeFillipo to win the game and the 2014 Mountain East Conference Championship.
The game featured a matchup between the MEC Offensive Player of the Year, NDC's
Alexis Manoa, and the MEC Defensive Player of the Year, WVW's Rachel Ritchey. The two seemed to have offset each other in the first half as both sides struggled to create scoring chances early.
Both sides established a physical presence in the first half, but defense was the name of the game in the first half. After a 45-minute scoring drought, the Falcons and Bobcats went into halftime tied at zero.
In the second half, each side had more success creating scoring opportunities, but couldn't capitalize on those opportunities, leaving the game scoreless.
The intensity picked up, as did the physical play, as both sides soon began to realize that one goal would likely be enough to win the game. However, that one goal continued to be elusive for both sides as the game was still scoreless with under five minutes to go.
With overtime looming, the Falcons made one last offensive push to win the MEC Championship on their home turf.
In the 89th minute, a gap suddenly opened in the Bobcats defense and junior Alex DeFillipo sped past a sea of WVW defenders to score the only goal of the game, using an assist from freshman
Maranda Melton to score the game-winning goal.
With only 1:33 remaining in regulation, NDC iced the rest of the game and watched the game clock strike zero, cementing the Falcons as the 2014 Mountain East Conference Champions.
With the victory, the Falcons not only secured their first ever MEC Championship, but also avenged last year's MEC Championship loss to WVW. The Falcons also improved to 14-2-2 on the season, as well as 9-1-1 when playing at home.
