SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Notre Dame women's golf program is participating in the Folds of Honor Military Tribute Program. (
Folds of Honor Program) (
Information on Senior Airman Alecia S. Good)
The Falcons have chosen to participate in the Folds of Honor program, to carry a golf bag in the honor of Senior Airman Alecia S. Good of the US Air Force. The idea of the program, provides the opportunity for any collegiate golf program to honor a fallen or severely wounded American soldier by having
a team member carry a golf bag displaying the name, rank and branch of service of the
soldier being honored during the school year.
"The military has always held a special place in my heart," said Head Coach
Colleen Groomes. "It is incredible to me that so many men and women are willing to sacrifice so much to ensure our safety and freedom."
Alecia Good, whom the Falcons have chosen to honor, died February 17, 2006 while serving in Operation Enduring Freedom. Good was killed at age 23 from injuries sustained in a helicopter collision while on assignment off the Red Sea in the Gulf of Aden.A 2001 graduate of Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School, Good enlisted in the U.S. Air Force just one month after 9/11. She was assigned to bases in San Antonio, Texas; Biloxi, Miss.; and, prior to her death, Fairchild AFB in Spokane, Wash. Good served as a tactical radio operator.
"Honoring Senior Airman Alecia S. Good and raising money for this cause is the least we can do to show our gratitude," Groomes added. "Carrying a bag in her honor will never erase the sacrifice Alecia made. However, in doing so we hope that we can honor her memory, the memory of all those who have and still do sacrifice their freedoms to protect ours, and let our service men, women, and their families know that what they do does not go unnoticed, and will never be forgotten."
The Falcons decided to participate in the program after learning about it last Spring from the Women's Golf Coaches Association.
Christine Bilas carried the bag for Notre Dame in their first tournament of the season at the MEC Fall Tournament,
Michiko Smith carried it at the Michael Corbett Fall Invitational and
Brianna Stokes carried it this past weekend at the Clarion Women's Fall Invitational.
