Late surge pushes Falcons past Defiance 5-4
LYNDHURST, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons won a pair of games in doubles play and used a clutch performance from Jonathan Morris in the final match on Thursday afternoon to defeat Defiance 5-4.

The victory for Notre Dame (7-8, 0-4) was their second in their last three games, giving them a record of 2-1 in April. The great start to April follows a tough stretch in March, where they compiled a record of 3-5.

After losing the first doubles match, the Notre Dame tag team of Matt Roche and Andy Sherman topped Austin Klemen and Trevor Ault 9-7, while Geoff Becktell teamed with Morris to take the final doubles match 8-6.

Notre Dame then took three singles matches to seal the victory. Jimmy Goodwin (8-7) defeated Ault in two sets, 6-4, 6-1 to score Notre Dame’s first singles victory. The Falcons trailed the match 4-3, until Kyle Roche and Morris delivered clutch performances in the final two matches.

Roche defeated Austin Gray 6-1, 6-1 to improve to 3-8 on the season, leaving the matchup of Morris and Defiance’s Mark Vandewander to determine the victory. Morris came through in a big way, as he defeated Vandewander 6-0, 6-0 for the win. The Huddersfield, England, native improved to 9-6 on the season with the win and still leads the Falcons in victories.

Notre Dame’s next match will take place on Friday, April 16, against Lake Erie. The match will take place at the Mentor Heisley Racquet Club in Mentor, Ohio, and is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
